First Nations leaders urge Australians to act on Invasion Day injustice
Herald Sun, January 26, 2026
Aboriginal leaders in the Northern Territory have spoken out about the pain they feel on Australia Day as much of the nation celebrates, arguing governments’ “failure to confront colonisation” means “the responsibility to act falls to the rest of us".
Aboriginal Investment NT chief executive Nigel Browne called for the date to be changed in the interest of national unity.
He pointed to the fact January 26 was only made a national public holiday for the first time in 1994.
