Empowering communities to make a slam dunk into leadership

The Hoops 4 Health (H4H) Champions Project, funded by Aboriginal Investment NT was designed to create sustainable leadership and sports-based healing programs across Groote Eylandt, the Tiwi Islands, and Tennant Creek (Barkly Region).

The initiative focused on identifying, upskilling, and mentoring local champions to embed H4H’s healing-centred sport concepts within their communities.

“The H4H Change Champions Project has created a foundation for long term, community-driven growth, empowering First Nations communities to lead their own change through sport and leadership,” Mr Duggan said.

By equipping local leaders with culturally relevant skills, the program fosters long-term impact, resilience, and youth empowerment through sport.

Hoops 4 Health AUS invited Aboriginal Investment NT for courtside yarns at their training centre and the opportunity meet with University of Virginia representatives.
“This is an initiative focused on the intersection of health, basketball, and youth leadership, that strongly aligns with our own healing-centred mission,”
– Timmy Duggan, Hoops 4 Health
University of Virginia joined Hoops 4 Health’s community engagement visits to Groote Eylandt, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs so they can learn how their successful business model can help to develop their international ‘Game Change’ program.

“It’s such a great opportunity to come out here all the way from the other side of the world and meet such an amazing community of people. It’s been really inspiring Hoops 4 Health means to the community. In Darwin and in Tiwi, everyone is so excited to see Hoops 4 Health. I’ve truly been able to see how sport really brings community together and foster relations between people from different backgrounds and promote wellbeing and mental health issues for people. Hoops 4 Health brings awareness to the past of Aboriginal Australians and promoting wellbeing and bringing everyone together, which is very special.”
