Closing the Distance: Empowering Tiwi Artists

Our vast land mass and diverse topography make intra-Territory travel costly, making it a challenge for organisations to advance their projects.
Ngaruwanajirri Art Centre applied for a Community Quick Response grant which will enable the organisation to strengthen cultural pride, artistic confidence and future opportunities within the Aboriginal arts sector.

It was a pleasure to visit the Outstation exhibition opening. We saw how our essential funding enabled support workers and artists, Graham Tipungwuti and David Tipuamantumirri to travel to Darwin – and of course the artists’ exceptional artistic practice.
Graham and David had the opportunity to meet with audiences, potential buyers, collectors and curators, and gain valuable professional exposure.
“Traveling to see their own exhibition is so meaningful, as they see how their artwork is presented and valued beyond the art centre and Tiwi community. David and Graham feel so proud when they see their work in the gallery and meet people interested in their art and warbling to learn about Tiwi culture.”

Congratulations on this incredible exhibition!
